Years ago I saw this really cool idea and started to keep
all my snippets of floss from my cross stitch projects. A couple years went by and I had stopped
stitching but there sat the jar of little snippets. Okay some were not so little since I had to frog some projects,
imagine that, lol.
A few years later I started to sew and quilt. And lo and behold, I started to put those
little snippets of thread in an old Mason jar of my Great Grandma’s. I think the jar of cross stitch floss and
filaments was also a jar from my Great Grandma’s jars.
Next thing you know, I have a bowl with thread snippets
beside my recliner where I do my hand work on the quilts.
So now there are 3 places that have these snippets. My husband stopped asking why I was keeping them
but it always raises eyebrows when someone first notices two of them in close
proximity to my recliner. During one
visit, my mom takes notice of these jars and asks what is up with them. I tell her oh it’s for some cute ornament
project I saw years ago.

I do not recall where I saw or heard about this snippet
collecting. For one year you were
supposed to keep your snippets and then right before Christmas you would put
them into the clear glass ornament and label it with the year and place it on
your tree hopefully with some of your completed cross stitch ornaments.
It is the start of 2013 and only the collecting part has
occurred. Now that I think of it I
bought a pack of 4 large glass ornaments so I could complete the project.
Then was browsing a couple of blogs and found that my little
snippets are also known as ORTs (Old Ratty Threads). They are the useless pieces of floss or filaments that the
needleworkers discard. The typical
needleworker will throw these out. Okay
so I’m not ordinary but never said I was.
But I think I have now found a bunch of kindred souls, who will be
posting pictures of their ORTs on the New Moon of each month. So I’m a couple days sort this month, but I
must join because it is obvious that I am one of them, lol. So I am joining the Total Useless Stitch-A-Long (TUSAL).
Since I am starting late, I took pictures of my current ORTs
that I will pull out and start fresh for 2013.
Welcome to my craziness…
Welcome to the TUSAL! I did save all mine and put them in glass ornaments with the year written on them, and they're so pretty! You already have an awesome head start!
